Uganda emerged as Champions in the CECAFA U20 Zonal Qualifiers in Tanzania to qualify for the final tournament in Mauritania. Despite being debutants, Uganda took the tournament by storm, and progressed all the way to the final where the Hippos lost 2-0 to Ghana. Striker Derrick Kakooza emerged as the tournament top scorer with five goals in six games. Kakooza alongside left back Aziz Kayondo were named in the tournament best XI with Morley Byekwaso named the best coach. Three players were awarded with man of the match accolades from the six games that Uganda played at the tournament. Uganda was also accorded with a Fair play award.
The Hippos under tactician Mathias Lule reached the semifinals but lost to Lesotho in Penalties after a goalless draw. Lesotho won 6-5.
